Roy rides down Trabuco Canyon

I attached a camera to the top of my helmet, and there you are. Filmed in the Summer of 2005.

The ultra-brief version of the “Bauer saga”

Edith and Zeppy
Günther Manfred (“Manny”) Bauer is born in Böblingen, Germany (Swabia) in 1932. Edith Bertha Hildegard Schultz is born in Stettin, Germany (Pomerania) in 1933.
In 1951, independently, Edith & Manny leave gray Germany for wacky and lurid North America on the Anna Salen. They wed in early 1953. Seeking opportunity, the two move west to British Columbia; Annie is born in 1954; Roy is born in 1955 (note the pattern of progress!).
Seeking still greener pastures, in 1960, the family moves to Orange County, California. Manny & Edith have two more children—Ray and Ron—and become U.S. citizens. Noses to the grindstone, the family pursues material advancement, humanistic and artistic development, and any (i.e., many) artistic impulses. By the seventies, Bauer Construction survives and the family is able to move to a fine property in isolated and rural Trabuco Canyon (actually, Live Oak Canyon).
Ronnie, Annie, Ray
Meanwhile, Annie marries hotshot engineer David, moves to the Bay Area, and pursues artistic interests and vocations; Roy pursues an academic career, marries Kathie, and eventually also pursues writing/blogging. Ray joins the Marine Corps, dabbles in construction, then inventing, but takes some wrong turns; he dies in a construction accident (in Reno, 2001). The youngest, Ron, earns a doctorate (UCLA), pursues film production (writing, doing meetings, holding booms), but, by the new millennium, helps solve communication/organizational problems for Honda while building a family with his betrothed, Susan Miller.
Bauer’s Canyon develops into a special family compound, with two kilns, ten guitars, intricate hand-made jewelry—and, at long last, visitations by four noisy, energetic, and lovable grandchildren, for Ron and Susan, denizens of Irvine, bring Sarah, then Adam, then Natalie and Catherine (a twofer!) into the world. (We think they’re done now.)
Starting in the late sixties, Manny and Edith painted. In the last ten or fifteen years, they've pursued pottery. They're pretty good at this stuff.
Many a beast has led a good life with the Bauers: Prince, Attila, Ildy, Sepl, Paco, Max, Felix, Greyball, Moon Unit, et al. They were loved; they flourished. They were part of the family.
     Life is good.
Or at least it ain’t bad. Not completely.

—Roy
